Overview:
The wraiths of the region are as varied as mortals walking the earth. Though, many were powerful people in life, and thus filled with perhaps more superiority in death than they have right to claim. Still, the most powerful of the spiriti are under the Giovanni Family’s control. Most spiriti of the region are but wandering wisps, incapable of interacting with the material world. But a few truly powerful spirits, like J. Edgar Hoover and Marie Prentiss, are capable of briefly possessing humans . . . and even supernaturals. The Underworld is infested with Sluagh: the ambling ravenous dead. The Sluagh are mindless, untamable creatures who are forever drawn to the Giovanni and other interlopers in the Underworld.
The Giovanni of the Potomac have a great many spiriti at their control. The Family keeps the majority of their spirits in the derelict Congressional Cemetery in the material realm and the surrounding Underworld castle they have built beyond the Sudario. But there are so many more spirits still untapped by the undead family of necromancers: Washington is a relatively new playground for the Family and they have maintained a cordially low profile (so far).
Beyond Washington, there are countless wraiths swirling in the necropolis of the battlefields of Fredericksburg and Manassas.
Recently, Gwenevieve Rossellini and Carlo Giovanni discovered a cabal of necromancers ensconced among the Sabbat conquerors of Washington openly parading among the leadership. It is possible they have some pull on spiriti of their own. The Family cannot let this stand.
Named Wraiths & Constructs
Giovanni, Elizabeta
Wraith. Elizabeta Giovanni was a Family ghoul assigned to the Giovanni Expedition in December of 1994 under Gwenevieve Rossellini. On December 19, 1994, Elizabeta was on a driving mission and had flanked Roosevelt Island on the Virginia side as the Player Character coterie attacked Hirut’s forces on the D.C. side of the island. Elizabeta was snatched, along with Giuseppe Giovanni, in the ensuing melee by the fleeing methuselah, Hirut. Hirut drained her in battle. Elizabeta followed her training and stayed with her body for extraction by the Family, but her body was found by passersby first. The mortal police began an investigation, but the Masquerade violation was quickly seen to by the usual Camarilla fixers with all that entails. This particular incidence was flagged, however, and Elizabeta’s body was transferred to the Tremere Lighthouse of Alexandria Chantry for examination. Elizabeta fled her body and the Tremere chantry to find her way through the Underworld to the battlements of the Giovanni Embassy. Carlo debriefs the family wraith and tells Gwenevieve about it on December 21, 1994.
Hoover, J. Edgar
Wraith. J. Edgar is a spirit whose bones rest in Congressional Cemetery, though his fetter is in his beloved FBI badge, now held by Gwenevieve Rossellini of Clan GIovanni. His partner, Clyde, is also a spirit in Congressional Cemetery, buried alongside him. He was assigned to Gwen in her mission for the Family when she came to the Giovanni Embassy of the Potomac Empire on November 27, 1994. He has the ability to possess living creatures — even unliving creatures — for short periods of time, creating havoc. He used this ability in the Giovanni Expedition in the battle against pursuing Lupines in Fredericksburg, Va. on December 10, 1994. He was again used for his powers against a trailing Sabbat vehicle in D.C. on December 18, 1994. He was able to crash the car, but he has not been seen since. Gwen sent Clyde to go look for him. J. Edgar recuperates over the next few nights and then rejoins Gwen (hovering behind the scenes). On December 26, 1994, J. Edgar learns that his partner, Clyde, had been destroyed by a rogue cabal of necromancers among the Sabbat. He caused the barn to shake at Frieda’s farm in rural Virginia upon hearing the news. J. Edgar vowed revenge (and gained more Unfinished Business in the process). John Edgar continued to travel with his mistress, serving as a lookout for others watching Gwen. Gwen was sure to compel J. and the other wraiths to wait outside of the Temple while the coterie spoke on December 29, 1994.
“Isabella”
Node Creature. “Isabella” is a multi-planar being created from the confluence of ley lines at a node by the Gateways of Death, Spirit and Light. It was created in the Sisterhood cave in the Blue Ridge Mountains on December 26, 1994. Is is a nonverbal undulating mass, though Gwenevieve took a liking to it and keeps it under her vestments. It can occupy either a space the size of a cat or can collapse in into a very small point of light. It is easily detectible by the Black Spiral Dancers, for whatever reason. There are more questions than answers about what “Isabella” is or can do.
“Lefty”
Necromantic Construct. “Lefty” is a finger-walking left hand, sawed off of a corpse by the adept necromancer, Gwenevieve Rossellini. Lefty was created in a grisly necromantic ritual on December 20, 1994 and has served his mistress ever since, hiding in her robes until needed.
Maria
Wraith. After Maria’s first death, she was a Gangrel. After a spiritual rebirth, she was of The Sisterhood. After her violent second death, she is now a confused spirit bound to Gwenevieve Rossellini of the Giovanni. Maria was mourned at the Sisterhood Gather at a cave in the Blue Ridge Mountains on December 26, 1994. The Giovanni Gwenevieve Rossellini attended that Gather and first caught notice of the wondering spirit. Gwenevieve came in possession of the spirit, though Maria has yet to exhibit any abilities and has only been whirling at the edge of camp, silently watching.
Patrick
Wraith. Patrick is a spirit “gifted” to Gwenevieve Rossellini to help her stay in contact with her Aunt Lucretia during her mission to D.C. He’s also obviously a spy. Patrick (and his fetter coin) were given to Gwen on November 26, 1994 by Lucretia Giovanni at the Family island in Boston Harbor. He travels with Gwen to Washington, and throughout the Sabbat conquest and on to the Giovanni Exhibition to the anomaly site. He is sent on menial missions by his new mistress, and occasionally on spy missions. He also serves as a communicator between regions: for telephonic technology is forbidden (or at least strictly monitored) on the Exhibition. He was able to find the size of the Tremere Bubble and has been useful in spy/scouting missions for Gwenevieve. On December 25, 1994, Patrick accompanied Gwenevieve as a spy at Il Gran Ballo in Sabbat Washington. Patrick’s mistress sent him and his fellow spirit, Clyde Tolson, out to follow a rogue necromancer among the Sabbat leadership. Patrick returned a night later to Gwenevieve at Frieda’s farm near Lovettsville, Va. to tell her that he and Clyde had been attacked by a cabal of rogue necromancers: with faces of bone. Clyde had been subsumed, and hideously destroyed to give the necromancers greater power. Patrick was damaged, but managed to escape. He left from there to report to Aunt Lucretia, as his first duty. The Family had to be made aware of the threat.
Prentiss, Marie
Wraith. [Note: to read of the actions of the Malkavian Kindred known as Prentiss before her “final death” at the hands of a Tzimisce in the Sabbat Conquest of Washington in December of 1994, read the entry for ‘Prentiss “Mother”’ on the Malkavian page.] Prentiss was cut down in the field by a Tzimisce abomination during the Sabbat Conquest of Washington. According to the Malkavian Cedric, the Cobweb “shook” with rage at her death. After going through the effort of tracking down all that was needed to compel the wrathful spirit of Prentiss, the Giovanni necromancer Gwenevieve Rossellini first called upon her on December 29, 1994 during a police chase from Old Town Manassas to the Giovanni Expedition anomaly site. Prentiss, though angry and resentful, was able to temporarily take over the mind of the driving police officer and convince him to turn in the opposite direction. She warned her new mistress that she could see that it was not the first time some supernatural had messed with the mind of this mortal officer.
Thaia
Wraith. Thaia was a member of The Sisterhood as a vampire. She was killed by corrupted “agents” of the Pentex Corporation while on a mission. She was then split from her conjoined spirit (as a Sister) then returned to the cave of The Sisterhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains as a confused and angry wisp. She was mourned by the other Sisters in a Gather ceremony on December 26, 1994. In the ceremony, the Sisters chanted her True Name . . . which was very helpful for an attending Giovanni. Thaia’s fetters were found and used and she became bound to the necromancer, Gwenevieve Rossellini. Thaia has yet to display any abilities, and has not yet been capable of interacting with anyone without the ability to see beyond the Shroud and is thus a wandering wisp on the edge of camp, watching over everyone.
Tolson, Clyde
Wraith. J. Edgar’s partner in life and now in death. Clyde is a wraith assigned to Gwenevieve Rossellini of Clan Giovanni to aid her in her mission for the Family. By “assigned,” his fetter is owned by the Family, as is his partner’s. Clyde has the ability to interact with spirits in the Underworld well. He had joined the Giovanni Expedition into the wilds of Virginia in early December of 1994. On December 18, The group traveled back up to D.C. to first lay a trap for their pursuers, but quickly took a turn into a frontal assault on the Cult of Hirut at Roosevelt Island. The assault landed shortly after midnight on December 19. J. Edgar had been sent after a car of chasing Sabbat warriors, but hadn’t been seen since he had crashed the car. Following the battle, Clyde was sent out to search for his partner. He reported that J. Edgar needed some time to recuperate his energies. On December 25, 1994, Gwenevieve detected a cowled necromancer rubbing elbows with the Cardinal and other leadership at Il Gran Ballo at RFK Stadium in Sabbat Washington. Gwenevieve sent Clyde and Patrick out to investigate. Patrick would later tell his mistress that he barely escaped, but that Clyde was “subsumed” by a group of skeleton-faced necromancers. Upon hearing this, Clyde’s parter J. Edgar Hoover caused the barn to shake with his rage.
Unnamed Wraiths & Constructs
Enochian skeleton warriors
Necromantic Constructs. Six skeletal warriors were created by the necromancer Gwenevieve Rossellini on December 28, 1994 from the bones of Enochian humans packed into crates in what was to be Ashûr’s ossuary in the Mekhetim Temple. Gwen uses the skeletons to guard her chambers.
Little Dutch Boy
Wraith. Apparently, Prentiss had multiple potential childer, though must have killed a few. She liked to dress them up un costumes. One of these unfortunates was seen by Gwenevieve on December 28, 1994 at Prentiss’ old haven in Ivy City. A wraith in a “Little Dutch Boy” costume hid among the stuffed animals and flotsam of the attic of horrors in Prentiss’ house.
Teenage Runaway
Wraith. One of Prentiss’ botched attempts at siring resulted in the nervous wraith seen by Gwenevieve on December 28, 1994 at Prentiss’ old haven in Ivy City. A young woman dressed in an ill-fitting frilly little girl’s dress hid among the stuffed animals and flotsam of the attic of horrors in Prentiss’ house.
