Rose’s notes from “To The Victor”
Notes by Ash
A few days ago my life seemed perfectly imperfect; and now I’m pedaling off into the forest with near nothing of my own other than a lighter, knife, and cigarette case loaded with joints I can’t even get high on because of this corpse of a body.
Fuck, it was Christmas morning not long ago. Our “rustic” abode was decorated in glitter, filled with the smell of incense, and we even had a tree with ornaments that happened to be condoms- some loose, others balloons, and I even managed to make a few condom-balloon-animals.
After we unboxed our gifts, which were mostly drugs, pastries, or gags, we ended up chewing down some magic mushrooms and taking a dive into our own winter wonderland in the neighboring park.
It was very interesting, the snow we were lying on top of felt like it inverted the world. The blue sky became a vast ocean while the white-washed earth became a sea of clouds my roommates and I were swimming in as we morphed into angels floating all around. I remember feeling so cold on the inside that I believed I couldn’t be a person anymore.
Just after I came down I found myself gazing into the park from my window, and then I saw him. There were two orbs of green reflective light in somethings eyes gazing right back at me. I managed to get a closer look through binoculars, and saw the facial features of a human paired with those inhuman, green, predatory eyes. I thought I was still high, and I decided to fix the problem by smoking a blunt with my roommate and headed back to sleep soon after.
Afterwards, myself and Viktor did a bit of training for Boxing Day and I had my last good, human meal to prep for a prizefight that night. Only I also had to work a shift waiting tables in a club too, which ended up strangely eventful.
I had a request from a guy named Bennett, who tipped me off that a fighter would wipe the floor with me later that night. I was spooked for a moment, wanted to know everything I could. Before I could get any more info out of him, he headed off without eating a bite of his food and dropped me a 100$ tip. I was sure there’d be a note asking me to blow him in the back or something, but I never found one.
I also met a regular named Kara, an older woman who I respect quite a bit for being involved somewhere like my workplace. She figured it was weird he didn’t ask for anything either, and I had to cut her off for the night so she didn’t make herself sick.
Before the fight I also got to spar with a co-worker named Gino, or “pizza-face” in the fight club. He ended up winning our sparring match and we had some small talk. I even probed a little bit about that nights mystery fighter with no results.
For my actual fight with Gino, I took the warmup into a tight victory; and afterwards the mystery fighter, Baruch appeared. The man practically dwarfed me and I expected the difference in weight class to put me down, but I ended up with a decisive win on him. It was a huge upset for him and the whole crowd… except Bennett with his toothy grin watching the whole thing. That and my friends, who all made a killing with their bets on me, which covered Bennetts moment's notice disappearance that took place over a blink. Afterwards we settled with pizza and a rotation just before bed.
Then I took Thorne for a late night walk, only he sprinted off before we really got started and I had to chase right after him. When I caught up he was just staring into the mist, and I tracked his gaze until Bennett materialized and attacked me.
I held him for a moment while I had Thorne flee, and we exchanged blows until I didn’t have enough fight anymore. Then he sunk his fangs into my neck and my life ebbed away while being replaced by something hotter and impulsive, this ambrosia of pure flame baptized me in undeath.
When I woke, Bennett explained that I was chosen because of my fighting spirit and ability, but then promptly left me alone just knowing I’m a vampire and not to let anyone know about my undead existence. If I looked like him it could’ve been easier, but my eyes are monstrous as far as I know so I can’t really pass for human.
My immediate goal after Bennett disappeared again was to find Thorn and keep at least one of my friends from human life, but he wouldn’t walk with me… it was like he didn’t recognize me at all.
Afterwards I sought shelter and eventually found an abandoned storage building, only my change decided to finish the ejection of all of my organs. Only it happened in a second, it was like my entire body spasmed and rejected my human flesh simultaneously and had me painted red.
All I could do was clean up my mess and sleep in a storage unit, and then find the sun creeping into my nest in my sleep and quickly block out its death rays.
At this point I had noticed the deep, yet distant hunger tugging on me and realized I had to eat. If the myths were to be believed, I’d have to drink human blood. Then I asked myself who would eat if I had to, and I knew immediately the worst person I know is my foster father, Jack. He burned villages in Vietnam, beat his wife and kids, and is generally just devoid of humane behavior. Knowing this, I decided to move towards his home and camp out for a while in the woods while I learn more about my condition.
I did have one stop before I really took off though, and in the lively atmosphere I decided to light up and destress, only I found the smoke to just be heavy air inside something that was very much not lungs.
I almost would’ve dropped all my joints, but then this dude who was blasted down to his atoms walked up to me and asked for a drag. I ended up giving him the whole joint and realized the only purpose of smoking now is to appear human.
I departed on a stolen bike into the cold, dark night. Unfortunately as soon as I made it into the bush, the howls started.
